This Privacy Policy explains how the Banterbird browser extension ("Banterbird", "we", "us", or "our") handles your information. Banterbird is designed to collect as little data as possible. The extension runs no analytics, does not track you, and does not send your data to any server we operate. (Our marketing website, banterbird.com, uses a privacy-first, cookieless analytics service — see "Website Analytics" below.)

By installing and using the extension, you agree to the practices described below.

Summary

• Your OpenAI API key and settings are stored locally in your browser only. They never reach our servers because we do not have any.
• When you generate a reply, the relevant tweet text and any attached images are sent directly from your browser to OpenAI, using your own API key, so OpenAI can produce the reply.
• The extension collects no analytics, usage data, IP addresses, device identifiers, your Twitter/X account, your contacts, or your browsing history.
• We use no cookies and require no account or login.

Information We Store Locally

The extension saves the following in your browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local) on your device. This information stays on your device and is only used to make the extension work:

• Your OpenAI API key.
• The OpenAI model you select.
• Your reply instructions / persona prompt.
• Any personalization you choose to add — your "About you" description, writing-style notes, and example posts.
• Your preferences (for example, reply-context mode and the automatic-window-close setting).

Because this data is stored locally, you can remove it at any time by clearing the extension's storage or uninstalling the extension. We never receive or transmit it.

Information Sent to OpenAI

Banterbird's core feature works by calling the OpenAI API directly from your browser. To generate a reply, the extension sends the following to OpenAI, authenticated with the API key you provided:

• The text of the tweet (and, depending on your selected context mode, the surrounding conversation) you are replying to.
• Any images attached to that tweet, if you have enabled the vision context mode.
• Your reply instructions / persona prompt.
• Any personalization you have set — your "About you" description, writing-style notes, and example posts — which are included in the prompt so the reply can match your voice.

This data is sent directly from your browser to OpenAI and does not pass through any server controlled by us. OpenAI's handling of this data is governed by OpenAI's own policies. Please review the OpenAI Privacy Policy and OpenAI Usage Policies. You are responsible for your use of your own OpenAI account and for any content you choose to generate and send.

Information We Do Not Collect

We want to be explicit: Banterbird does not collect or receive any of the following:

• Personally identifiable information.
• Usage data, analytics, or telemetry.
• IP addresses or device identifiers.
• Your Twitter/X account credentials, profile, contacts, or activity.
• Your browsing history.

Website Analytics

Our marketing website (banterbird.com) uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy-first measurement service. It is cookieless, does not track you across sites, and records only aggregate visit statistics (such as page views and referrers). It collects no personal data and is not connected to the extension. This applies only to the website — the extension itself runs no analytics, as described above.

Permissions

The extension requests only the permissions it needs to function:

• Host access to x.com and twitter.com — so it can read the post on the page and insert your generated reply. The extension only acts on these sites.
• scripting — so it can run its reply-generation logic on the X tab you are viewing when you trigger it.
• storage — so it can save your API key and settings locally, as described above.

Data Retention

Because we do not collect or store your data on any server, there is nothing for us to retain. The data stored locally on your device persists until you clear the extension's storage or uninstall it.

Security

Your API key and settings are stored in your browser's local extension storage. While we take care to keep the extension's footprint minimal, no method of electronic storage or transmission over the Internet is 100% secure. We recommend you treat your OpenAI API key as a secret and revoke it from your OpenAI account if you believe it has been exposed.

Children's Privacy

Banterbird is not directed to anyone under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect any information from children. Because we do not collect personal data at all, this is reinforced by design.

Third-Party Services

The extension relies on the OpenAI API to generate replies, and it operates on the Twitter/X website. Your use of those services is governed by their respective terms and privacy policies. We have no control over, and assume no responsibility for, the practices of OpenAI or Twitter/X.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the extension after a change indicates your acceptance of the updated policy.
